Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about our research, planning tools, membership, and retirement planning resources.
Getting Started
What is Civic News Review?
Civic News Review is an independent retirement research site for Americans age 55 and older. We publish state rankings, cost-of-living analysis, property tax comparisons, healthcare cost reports, Social Security guides, and interactive planning tools.
Is Civic News Review financial advice?
No. Our research is educational and informational only. It is not personalized financial, tax, legal, or investment advice. Consult a qualified advisor before making relocation, tax, or investment decisions.
Research & Reports
How often is your research updated?
We update reports quarterly or when major policy changes occur — tax law updates, Social Security COLA announcements, Medicare premium changes, and new Census or BLS data releases.
What is the difference between free and premium reports?
Free reports include key findings and summary analysis. Premium reports (marked with a Premium badge) include the full advisor-quality analysis: scenario modeling, risk assessment, personalized action plans, expanded FAQs, and downloadable PDFs with Civic Research Plus membership.
How do you rank states for retirement?
We score all 50 states across 32 weighted metrics: financial factors (35%), healthcare (25%), quality of life (20%), housing (15%), and climate (5%). Data comes from the IRS, CMS, BLS, Census Bureau, and state revenue departments.
Planning Tools
Are the retirement calculators free?
Yes. All five planning tools — Retirement State Finder, Cost of Living Comparison, Retirement Income Calculator, Property Tax Comparison, and Healthcare Cost Explorer — are free to use. Premium members get expanded personalized assessments.
How accurate are the calculator results?
Calculators use national and state-level data averages. Results are estimates for planning purposes. Your actual costs depend on your health, home value, income sources, and lifestyle. Use our research reports for deeper context on any estimate.
Social Security & Medicare
When should I claim Social Security?
There is no single best age for everyone. Claiming at 62 reduces benefits permanently. Delaying to 70 increases benefits by up to 77%. Most married couples benefit from delaying the higher earner's benefit to 70. See our Social Security Optimization Guide for full analysis.
When do I enroll in Medicare?
Enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period: 3 months before, the month of, and 3 months after your 65th birthday. Missing this window can result in permanent premium penalties. If you are still working with employer coverage, verify whether you can delay enrollment.
Relocation
How much can I save by relocating in retirement?
A median retiree can save $8,000–$15,000 per year by moving from a high-cost state to a mid-cost state. Over a 25-year retirement, that compounds to $200,000+ in preserved purchasing power. Use our Cost of Living Comparison Tool to model your specific situation.
Should I visit a state before retiring there?
Absolutely. Spend at least two weeks in your top choice across different seasons. Verify healthcare provider access, test the commute to services you need, and talk to local retirees. Many who skip this step relocate twice within three years.

What is Civic Research Plus?
